Peace this Christmas – the Western Front again

On Christmas Eve 1914, in a remarkable break from war, German and British soldiers fighting on the Western Front ceased hostilities, climbed from their trenches, erected Christmas trees, played soccer and joined in singing hymns. Fighting soon continued; 30 million people died in WWI.

This Christmas Eve, representatives from 15 warring tribes will gather in Tari, in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), to learn peace. Read the rest of this entry »


Uniting Church supports those affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Rev. Gregor Henderson, President of the National Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia, has carried messages of support from the Church to Christians, Jews and Muslims living with and affected by the conflict in Israel-Palestine.

As part of a group of Australia’s Church Leaders who visited the region this month, Rev. Henderson said he was dismayed by the level of suffering, pain and oppression being experienced by both Israeli and Palestinian people. Read the rest of this entry »


“Making Peace”

One of the best features of the Uniting Church is that we are very much a peace-making church. That’s the way it should be!

When John the Baptist’s father sang God’s praises at the news of Mary’s pregnancy he declared that Jesus was coming “to guide our feet into the way of peace”. When the angels sang at Jesus’ birth their message was “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace, good will among people”. Read the rest of this entry »
