Uniting Church Victoria and Tasmania, its wider UnitingCare network and Wesley Mission Victoria is resolutely unaffiliated with Wesley Mission NSW’s stance to reject same-sex couples adopting children.
This clarification follows considerable media attention on Wesley Mission NSW’s fostering arm which won this exemption through how the anti-discrimination act applies to religions.
“Wesley Mission Victoria offers fostering to same-sex couples. Along with all UnitingCare agencies, the agency is a separate entity from Wesley Mission NSW,†said Isabel Thomas Dobson, Moderator of Uniting Church Victorian and Tasmania Synod.
“This Uniting Church Synod’s resolutions strongly advocate that our agencies should oppose the practicing of such discrimination.
“Furthermore there are other UnitingCare agencies which are active advocates of same-sex couple rights and continue to support their roles in caring and fostering of children.
“Our processes for assessing foster carers are extensive and stringent and the best interests of the child are always paramount. Moreover, we are grateful to all carers who open their lives and their homes to give a child care when it is most needed,†Ms Thomas Dobson said.
