Skills Audit of Work Rights-ineligible Asylum Seekers Living
in the Community
- 113 work rights and Medicare ineligible asylum seekers
who accessed the major asylum seeker services in a two week
period were surveyed.
- Of the 113 surveyed, 71% had skills recognised on the
Skilled Occupation List for the General Skilled Migration
Program (this included 4 who were in the process of attaining
a listed skill). Occupations included:
- Engineers
- Teachers
- Tailors
- Social Workers
- Computer Programmers
- Agricultural Scientists
- Of those listed on the Skilled Occupation List, 45% had
skills that were considered in high demand according to
the Migration Occupations in Demand List, these included:
- Accountant
- Chef
- Electrician
- Hairdresser
- Nurse
- Refrigeration & Air Con. Mechanic
- Welder
- Podiatrist
- Plasterer
- Plumber
- Dentist
- 43% of those surveyed held professional qualifications
- 27% held or were in the process of attaining a Bachelor
Degree or higher.
- 33% of those surveyed held trade qualifications
- Of all those surveyed only one stated that they were unwilling
to update their skills and this was an award winning head
chef with 25 years experience who did not see the need to
update.
- The majority of those surveyed were willing to work in
rural or regional area

welders. (One of these would be enough to qualify him as
First Class Welder for the Skilled Migration Program)

7 years experience with both marine and
automotive engines.

Able to carry out major repairs including
manufacture of replacement parts using lathe, milling machine
and Arc, Oxy and TIG welding.
