This week marks the launch of a new initiative by UnitingCare Australia (and with a bunch of other partners) under the name of Uniting For Change.
The purpose of Uniting for Change is to motivate and resource the sleeping giant that is the non-active UCA (and other allies) into action for social change. Hit the website, sign up and they’ll help provide you with all the information you need to get active and involved (even with a small amount of personal effort). They’ll also keep you in the loop with regular email updates.
Go on, hit Uniting for Change and get active.
The first campaign relates to gaming machines. I’ve written about this topic before (here and here) and there’s no question this is a topical issue right across Australia at the moment.
The problems caused by gaming machines, and suffered by problem gamblers, their families, workplaces, friends and communities are horrendous. And the straight-out lies and misinformation being fed into media by the gaming industry (and it must be said with political support) are atrocious. The politicisation of this issue (to the disregard of the monumental social ills it causes) is a disgrace.
Hit this story for a voice of reason in the form of Tim Costello pointing out some of the worst flaws in the claims of the clubs industry.
And then hit Uniting for Change. Sign up, write a letter to your MP and make sure your voice is heard.
